Oil extraction effects on environment

26 Apr 2016 Oil extraction may cause extensive environmental impact that can affect health of populations living in surrounding areas. Large populations

The extraction of oil is responsible for the deforestation, degradation, and environmental devastation of lands across the globe. The oil extraction process results in the release of toxic drilling by-products into local rivers, while broken pipelines and leakage result in persistent oil spillage. Much of the oil we use is deep below the surface of the Earth, oftentimes in the middle of the ocean. When oils rigs malfunction, thousands of tons of oil can seep into the environment. Oil spill effects on environments can be catastrophic: they can kill plants and animals and pollute air/water.. The effects of an oil spill on the environment depend on the type of oil. Fuel oils like diesel and gasoline are oils that evaporate quickly but are toxic and can ignite. Bunker oils, used to fuel ships, are heavier, appear black and sticky and can stay in the environment for months or even years if not removed. The most notorious examples of rainforest havoc caused by oil firms are Shell Oil in Nigeria and Texaco in Ecuador. The operations run by both companies degraded the environment and affected local and indigenous people by their activities. Use of oil products contributes ∼35% of global GHG emissions, and the oil industry itself consumes 3–4% of global primary energy. Because oil resources are becoming increasingly heterogeneous, requiring different extraction and processing methods, GHG studies should evaluate oil sources using detailed project-specific data.

As with the extraction and use of any fossil fuel, negative environmental effects arise as a result of the extraction, upgrading, and processing of bitumen from the oil sands. Although some steps are being taken to reduce the severity of these impacts - such as reclamation - there are still associated climate, air, water, and other ecological effects. Advance and defend policies to reduce environmental risks. Why: While the oil and gas industry has made strides to reduce methane pollution, it's not enough. We need to defend federal policies and advance state policies that protect our climate and environment. How: We're fighting for methane standards at state and federal levels.
