I think chess.com average rating is 1000 (Glicko, the improved version of elo), but primarily due to closed/abandoned accounts. If you want chess.com percentile, it is under your stats in your profile - but remember it is likely inflated for the reason mentioned above.

Here, on chess.com, the incoming rating is set at 1200 for everyone, regardless of age. Since there is no way to verify age in any case, but with the understanding that most incoming players are relatively young, the 1200 number certainly seems reasonable. There's no such thing as an "average" chess rating, but a solid club-level chess player might be rate somewhere around 1500-1700. In general, a person's rating will increase as that person becomes more experienced. Most people can continue improving well into middle age. At some point, though, age-related decline kicks in.
